Assistant Controller
The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and consistency of financial information for a U.S. bank and supports accounting and regulatory reporting. The role involves applying U.S. GAAP, analyzing financial data, and preparing financial and regulatory reports.
Tasks and responsibilities
This role is part of the Controllership and Regulatory Reporting team within the U.S. Finance team and is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and consistency of financial information for a U.S. bank. This includes applying U.S. GAAP and financial data analysis procedures, preparing accurate and timely financial and regulatory reports, and ensuring the effectiveness of internal accounting control processes. Additional responsibilities include analyzing financial performance and carrying out special projects as assigned.Detailed Tasks
- Support for the accounting and controllership functions, including the recording of assets and liabilities, revenue and expense recognition, and intercompany transactions in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Preparation and assistance with the filing of regulatory filings, including banking regulatory reports (e.g., Call Report / FFIEC 041 or 051, FR Y-9C / Y-9LP / Y-9SP), and assistance with OCC and FDIC examinations, information requests, and correspondence.
- Support with Basel III capital reporting (CET1, Tier 1, total capital, leverage ratio), RWA methodology and documentation (with a focus on Lombard loans, mortgages, and secured exposures), as well as the CECL (ASC 326) framework and the modeling of provisions.
- Manage monthly and annual closing processes, including the preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations, to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP.
- Participate in external financial statement audits, regulatory reviews, and internal audits. Assist in the development and maintenance of internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices, including Regulation W and the requirements for related-party transactions.
- Support for billing and payment processing activities at other Itaú companies in the United States (e.g., New York, Lisbon, Zurich, Luxembourg, and the Caribbean).
- Managing and supervising a team of associate and analyst accountants.
- Compliance with the principles, laws, regulations, and guidelines related to anti-money laundering and bank secrecy, as well as Itaú’s corresponding policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent.
- 6 to 9 years of experience in financial accounting at a U.S. commercial bank with direct exposure to OCC, FDIC, and/or Federal Reserve audits.
- Extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP and banking industry products.
- Practical experience in preparing and reviewing U.S. banking regulatory filings, including the Call Report and the FR-Y-9 series.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Fluency in Portuguese or Spanish is a plus.
- A CPA or MBA is an asset.
