Associate Cross-Asset Trader
The Associate Cross-Asset Trader at Man Group in Hong Kong supports the investment department by executing trades and developing trading strategies. The position requires trading experience, programming skills, and strong analytical abilities to solve complex problems.
Job Description
To provide execution and order placement services to Man’s investment platforms.Responsibilities
- Regulatory and legal framework: Be aware of and comply with the regulatory and legal framework governing the trader’s activities, including but not limited to market abuse rules. Ensure that you are up to date and able to review market risk limits and thresholds as well as prudential limits.
- Processes and Procedures: Know, understand, and comply with Man’s Global Compliance policies and any internal procedures relevant to the trader’s business activities, as well as with the requirements set forth in Man’s Staff Handbook and Global Code of Ethics and any local code of conduct. Maintain accurate records so that if transactions are questioned, the PM’s recorded instructions have been documented on the trade; if the trade does not comply with the agreed trade instructions, it must be escalated to the designated line manager.
- Report any regulatory concerns to Compliance and to your designated line manager if you become aware of suspicious market activity or known or suspected violations of regulations, exchange rules, or company policy.
Best Execution
- Continues to improve processes to ensure that Man meets its best execution obligations for its clients.
- Manage and regularly review decision-making tools.
- Without a framework for the continuous evaluation and improvement of the execution process to minimize slippage and adverse trading costs.
- Application of quantitative methods combined with trading experience to determine and discuss with the portfolio manager the optimal trading strategy that best aligns with the portfolio manager’s trading and investment objectives.
Lean Technology, Trading
- Provide trading technology to enhance execution tools.
- Improve technology to help automate workflows.
- Drive the development of our trading platform, infrastructure, and technology.
- Use applications and quantitative analysis to measure the performance of our systematic and discretionary strategies.
Broker Relationship Evaluation/Review
- Overseeing the broker roster and ensuring the proper allocation of order flow, taking into account broker performance metrics, coverage models, execution research, and operational efficiency.
- Feedback to brokers on areas for improvement, rankings, etc.
- Price risk, valuation, negotiation, and onboarding new clients.
- Liaise with operations teams to ensure there is no discretion or failure to achieve best execution at process bottlenecks, which could result in missed opportunities in the pursuit of best execution.
Operational and Organizational Considerations
- Ability to reassess or cancel an order “late,” based on the portfolio manager’s recorded instructions, if necessary (this should not extend past market close).
- Continues to be able to view P&L's holdings.
- Firsthand experience in market making for trades.
- Liaison with the stock desk.
Key Skills & Experience
- 1–3 years of trading experience at a financial institution or relevant technical experience.
- Advanced skill level – programming languages such as Python and SQS.
- Developing an understanding of market microstructure.
- A hands-on approach; willing to get involved with technology and projects throughout the firm.
- A strong academic record and a degree from a leading university.
- Attention to detail and a disciplined approach: Able to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to thrive.
- Intellectually strong with a keenly analytical approach to problem-solving; curious, entrepreneurial, and innovative, and eager to get involved with technology and projects across the firm.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with and engage investment management teams and regions; a communicator who works effectively with clients, technology teams, and the front office.
- Team player; collaborative, customer-focused, and results-driven.
- Strong proficiency in written and spoken Mandarin.
- Willingness to travel and work from our Shanghai office.
