Data Center Engineer

The Data Center Engineer is responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining servers, network hardware, and storage systems in a data center, ensuring that the environment complies with industry best practices, security protocols, and compliance standards. The job is a 12-month contract as a daily rate contractor in London.

Tasks

  • Infrastructure management: Installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers, network hardware, and storage systems, including upgrades, in the data center.
  • Incident management: Point of contact for incidents or emergencies in the data center, with fast and efficient solutions.
  • Troubleshooting: Assisting system owners with troubleshooting, including outside of regular working hours and interacting with remote hands when necessary.
  • Environmental monitoring: Utilizing existing tools to monitor and manage power, cooling, and space utilization across all locations to ensure we remain within contractually agreed limits.
  • Security and compliance: Ensuring that the data center environment complies with industry best practices, security protocols, and compliance standards.
  • Supplier management: Ensuring that relevant suppliers comply with environmental specifications and SLAs and maintaining good working relationships with everyone, using an existing onboarding process to integrate new suppliers as needed.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of systems, processes, and configurations using existing tools.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other teams and stakeholders, such as Unix, networks, and storage, to ensure smooth operations and address issues.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive experience working in data centers with the installation and uninstallation of various hardware components is expected.
  • Strong experience in data center cabling, including structured fiber optic and copper cabling, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with current Dell and HP servers as well as Cisco and Arista network hardware is expected.
  • Previous experience in related fields.
  • Experience with Excel, Visio, CommScope, Java, Nlyte, ServiceNow, and Device42 is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to learn and communicate technical information.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
