The Financial Crime Operations Expert reviews and evaluates transactions for legality and identifies suspicious activity to report to the appropriate authorities. The expert works closely with the Financial Crime Compliance team to minimize risks and ensure compliance with regulations.

Financial Crime Operations Expert

Tasks

  • Review and investigate suspicious reports to the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and determine whether transactions warrant escalation to the MLRO and/or local AML team
  • Conducting research related to this control against Financial Crime Compliance (FCC) policies and procedures to determine whether the detection rules and alerts need to be modified
  • Contribute to building/testing new and existing suspicious activity reports to support the first line of defense
  • Review and escalate suspicious activity reports and perform root cause analysis of alerts to identify root cause
  • Perform root cause analysis of false positive alerts to identify and mitigate root causes
  • Creation of MI/key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of transaction monitoring
  • Provision of IMSM (intelligence) related to FCC activities to senior management

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial analysis of customer transactions using transaction research tools to assess whether data can be used to identify structuring or escalation
  • Precisely documented and comprehensible decisions for closure or escalation to authorizing authorities
  • Understanding the purpose of alerts and assessing their daily/current/unusual gains/losses; identifying potential issues
  • Determine if dissatisfaction reports have been received and assign appropriately for a thorough root cause analysis
  • Populating populations of systems to analyze suspicious transactions on demand
  • Ensure investigations comply with HSBC's global standards, policies and procedures
  • Ensuring that root cause analyses are registered by other departments
  • Supporting the Head of Financial Crime Compliance Operations with special projects

Requirements

  • Degree: Preferably in banking, business administration
  • Technical skills and experience related to risk and regulatory/compliance requirements in a financial institution environment; suspicious activity monitoring/transaction reporting (STR) experience or equivalent; AML/CFT experience
  • Demonstrable skills:
    • Communication and interpersonal skills
    • Complex analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
    • Self-motivation, good communication skills and a proactive approach
    • Fluent in English (written and spoken) and knowledge of another language, e.g. French
  • Proven experience in compliance, banking, preferably in a regulated business in a second line of defense or regulatory organization
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Internal certification requirements apply to the Transaction Monitoring Compliance Office; details of internal certification requirements are available on request; usually involves completion of an e-learning module; holder of a relevant SFI exam
