Head of Investment Risk, Discretionary

Man Group is seeking a "Head of Investment Risk, Discretionary" in London to lead an experienced risk management team and provide strategic guidance. The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in risk management and a strong technical and quantitative background.

Tasks

The Discretionary Risk Management department is seeking an experienced risk and control manager with strong technical and quantitative skills to lead this high-performing department. Key responsibilities include:
  • Strategic leadership of the Discretionary Risk Management department and fostering a culture of excellence and high performance
  • Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including portfolio managers, senior management, clients, and regulatory authorities
  • Monitoring and assessing risks across all funds and accounts managed by Discretionary
  • Chairing the Discretionary Risk Committee, setting the agenda, and implementing measures
  • Promoting continuous improvement in risk management methodologies, frameworks, and tools
  • Establishing and maintaining the governance of the investment strategies used in Discretionary and across the entire company
  • Development, implementation, and oversight of strategic risk projects from conception through completion
  • Improving and embedding the first-line risk management framework and managing risks and control functions
  • Ensuring that risk issues are resolved in a timely manner, prioritized based on materiality, significance, and potential impact

Requirements

The ideal candidates should meet the following requirements:
  • A graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., finance, mathematics, economics, or a related field)
  • At least 10 years of experience in risk management and/or internal control (ideally in asset management or a similar industry)
  • Proven experience in discretionary risk management (required)
  • Strong technical foundation combined with in-depth knowledge of market microstructure and market data (absolutely essential)
  • Knowledge of AI/machine learning applications and Python programming
  • Proven experience in leadership, team development, and mentorship (required)
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk modeling, stress testing, and broader risk management techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex risk concepts to a variety of audiences
