Linux Support Engineer
The Linux Support Engineer is responsible for the stability, maintenance, and continuous improvement of technology systems within Man Group, with a focus on Linux/Unix servers, storage, networking, and databases. The role involves providing first- and second-level support, monitoring systems, and collaborating with various teams to ensure service quality and technical solutions.
Role Overview
The Linux Support Engineer is responsible for the stability, maintenance, and continuous improvement of technology systems within Man Group’s Technology division, with a focus on Linux/Unix servers, storage, networking, and databases. The successful candidate will act as a technical partner, take ownership of issues from start to finish, drive service quality, and work closely with quant, trader, and operations officers, as well as engineering teams.Role Responsibilities
Support & Operations
- Provide Level 1 and Level 2 support for Unix-based systems (CentOS/Ubuntu) to ensure prompt resolution of incidents and service requests
- Proactively monitor systems and services, anticipate problems, and resolve them before they affect users
- Address issues from their inception through to resolution, and maintain clear communication with stakeholders throughout the entire process
- Prioritize issues and manage them to resolve the root cause, set priorities, and establish clear expectations
Infrastructure & Engineering
- Create and configure new Linux virtual machines using Terraform and Ansible
- Support in analyzing the root cause of production incidents with DevOps, engineering, and platform engineering teams
- Management and support of a wide range of technologies, including Oracle, Vault, Kubernetes, GKE, and related platforms
Stakeholder management
- Act as a trusted partner for research users, quantitative analysts, and traders—manage technical relationships with stakeholders; escalate complex issues to specialized teams as needed to ensure service continuity
- Collaborating with other tech support teams to develop and improve shared services
Service Improvement
- Promote ongoing service improvement initiatives to enhance quality and user satisfaction
- Develop long-term solutions to recurring problems to support business and IT
- Propose and implement best practices across Man Group Technology
- Ensure that all IT services meet the agreed-upon SLA targets
Key competencies
Required
- Extensive hands-on experience with the Linux operating system, preferably Ubuntu and/or CentOS
- Practical knowledge of Docker, subsystems, and/or OpenStack
- Practical experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and/or Ansible
- Scripting and automation skills in Python and/or Bash
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and root cause analysis skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of technical and non-technical stakeholders
