Operational Risk and Internal Controls Specialist
This position provides specialized support to the Operational Risk and Internal Controls department in assessing processes, risks, and controls to ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. The candidate identifies vulnerabilities, develops action plans to mitigate risks, and monitors compliance with BSA/AML policies and other legal requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with various business partners to facilitate the completion of all activities assigned to them within their business units.
- Assisting the Principal Risk Owners and Principal Risk Coordinators in identifying key risks and mitigating controls in day-to-day operations and projects, as well as designing and executing tests to identify potential control weaknesses, and preparing appropriate documentation
- Assist business partners in developing action plans to address the control gaps identified in the mitigation measures.
- Monitor the completion of all assigned tasks by business partners to ensure that agreed-upon changes have been implemented.
- Create Key Risk Indicators and support business partners in developing action plans
- Perform duties and responsibilities specific to the department's functions and activities
- Identify risks and analyze operational gaps and activities
- Conduct self-assessments or controls to identify potential control weaknesses or deficiencies discovered during the design of working papers and the performance of tests to identify potential control weaknesses
- Review new product proposals to ensure they are supported by documentation and comply with laws and regulations. Provide feedback to committees, if necessary.
- Assist third parties with the overall assessment process and the ongoing monitoring of outstanding items that require follow-up and resolution.
- Conduct regulatory processes, conduct research, and recommend appropriate changes to minimize these issues
- Monitor compliance with BSA/AML policies and procedures. Compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and related policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in business or a related field is preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.
- At least 2 years of experience in a bank and/or brokerage firm, specializing in operational risk, audit, or risk assessment roles.
- Proven ability to develop, document, and maintain operational risk documentation that details process flows, as well as to develop policies, procedures, and reports.
- Experience conducting assessments, reviews, audits, and/or testing across various business areas and processes.
- Experience working with Excel, Access, and/or other similar tools to develop and maintain various analysis and reporting tools.
- Knowledge of tools used for data science and other statistical analyses, such as SAS, Tableau, ACL, R, or Python. (Preferred)
- Knowledge of U.S. banking and broker-dealer regulations, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and COSO methodology.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Strong communication skills.
- Fluency in English.
- Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is preferred.
