Principal Cloud Architect
Northern Trust is seeking a Principal Cloud Architect in Chicago who, as a strategic technical leader, will drive digital transformation by building secure, scalable cloud and hybrid environments. The position requires over 10 years of experience, including at least 5 years in cloud architecture, as well as expertise in leading cloud platforms, containerization, and Infrastructure as Code.
Tasks
- Architecture and Design: Building cloud-native or hybrid environments from the ground up. Creating high-level and detailed technical designs using cloud technologies and best practices (security, compliance, scalability) to ensure that solutions are scalable, resilient, and secure.
- Leadership: Strategic technical leadership across multiple teams, influencing cloud adoption and implementation decisions.
- Innovation: Incorporating emerging technologies and trends into continuous improvement and innovation.
- Collaboration: Close communication with engineering, security, and DevOps teams, as well as business stakeholders, to define and implement solutions.
- Excellence in Execution: Leading teams of architects, engineers, and developers to ensure that products meet business requirements.
- Strong communication skills.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field.
- More than 10 years of professional experience, including at least 5 years specifically in the field of cloud architecture.
- Expertise in at least two major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI).
- In-depth knowledge of cloud networks, containers, serverless services, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and CI/CD.
- Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and serverless architectures.
- Expertise in cloud security: identity management, encryption, role-based access control, compliance standards.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM).
- Familiarity with multi-cloud or hybrid cloud configurations.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Cloud Certifications: AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert/Associate/Professional, Google Professional Cloud Architect.
- Certifications in Kubernetes, Docker, or container technologies.
- Experience with the principles of Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA).
- Familiarity with multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments.
- Extensive background knowledge of security compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, etc.).
- Experience with data analysis, storage solutions, or big data technologies.
- Previous experience leading transformation initiatives within large companies.
- Understanding of the software development life cycle and IT governance frameworks.
- Experience leading complex cloud transformation projects.
- Proven success in advisory roles with cross-functional teams.
