Principal Software Engineer (.NET Technical Lead)
Northern Trust is seeking a Principal Software Engineer (.NET Technical Lead) in Chicago to lead an engineering team in developing a process orchestration engine using .NET, Azure, and Kubernetes. The position requires at least five years of experience, technical leadership, and the ability to design and implement scalable software solutions.
Tasks
- Providing leadership, mentoring, and guidance to an engineering team of 5 people
- Defining Expectations and an Engineering Culture
- Lead the principal engineer team in terms of appropriate workload, task definition, coordination, technical expertise, time management, and engineering team efforts to ensure the team is utilized efficiently
- Conducting and implementing user research, drawing on the team's collective insights and industry-standard knowledge of the target audience to ensure that the service aligns with customer needs
- Developing systems and supporting applications using .NET Core, .NET, ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework, UML, BPM, and modern API frameworks
- Participate in and assist with the maintenance and development of other solutions using SQL and related tools
- Design and development of scalable software solutions using Azure architecture, Docker, Kubernetes, and Microsoft Azure tools for automation, data management, and infrastructure
- Lead technical project planning, including feature estimation, technical strategy, and implementation
- Promoting innovation in all aspects of the business, including products, services, the customer experience, and interactions with partners and customers
- Identifying and communicating emerging technology trends, tools, and architectural innovations to improve existing systems and operational efficiency
- Collaboration with Engineering Product Owners and other senior NT employees
- All required and ongoing training to improve development skills, including quality, testing, and documentation
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in computer science, engineering, or a related field
- Proven and relevant leadership experience within an engineering team
- BS, BSIT, BSEE
- Intermediate to advanced understanding of the architecture of an enterprise application (microservices and/or batch)
- Solid understanding and deployment of containers and Kubernetes
- Solid understanding of CI/CD and a basic understanding of DBA concepts
- Understanding of methodologies and tools for managing technical and creative problem-solving
- Cloud Services: Azure Certified and AWS Certified Solutions Architect (optional)
- Proficiency in .NET with a broad understanding of data structures and SQL
- Advanced degree or certification in a related field (optional)
- A solid understanding of cloud and platform solutions
- Technical experience and skills in one or more of the following areas: Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration; Infrastructure as Code (IaC), DevOps, or CI/CD pipelines
- Strong technical problem-solving skills for identifying issues across the entire tech stack—from client/browser and API (front-end or middle tier) to the database (web services) and infrastructure layer (physical/cloud)
- Strong communication skills
- Proven ability to build teams and lead complex technical initiatives across multiple teams
- Strong SQL and database skills, including performance tuning and optimization
- Experience with microservices architecture and related technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker, Spring Cloud, Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.)
- Experience with agile methodologies and practices (e.g., Scrum, Kanban, Extreme Programming, etc.)
- A passion for building and maintaining highly scalable and high-performance applications
- Understanding of .NET Core and modern API frameworks
- Knowledge of SQL, Windows, Azure DevOps, Jeeves, or similar CI/CD tools
- Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives
