Northern Trust is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer in Chicago who can provide technical leadership and hands-on expertise in Java, Azure Cloud, and DevOps. The role involves designing the architecture of complex cloud-native applications, mentoring teams, and collaborating with global stakeholders.

About the role

  • We are looking for a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer who can provide technical leadership and hands-on expertise in complex, cloud-native applications and infrastructures, including front-end, back-end, and DevOps functions.
  • As a Principal/Lead Software Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping our technology architecture, guiding team members, and promoting best practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and secure software solutions.
  • You will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders, including Product, Architecture, Data, and Operations, and foster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Tasks

  • Serve as a technical resource for product, QA, and platform teams.
  • Work closely with cross-functional stakeholders, including Product, Architecture, Data, and Operations.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to various internal and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate effectively with globally distributed teams in the United States, Europe, and India, while taking time zones and work styles into account.
  • Proactively identify risks and propose pragmatic solutions.
  • Lead development using Java and modern application development tools, and design and build complex systems with a focus on products and customers.
  • Work closely with architects and other engineers to define and enforce engineering standards and best practices.
  • Design, build, and deploy applications on Microsoft Azure using cloud-native services.
  • Apply Infrastructure-as-Code practices using modern tools and technologies.
  • Apply modern development practices.
  • Support and continuously improve DevOps pipelines, CI/CD practices, and infrastructure automation.
  • Promote reliable, monitorable, and cost-effective systems in the cloud.
  • Promote Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing for unit and integration tests.
  • Strengthen monitoring, alerting, and production readiness.
  • Mentor and support engineers to improve their technical skills, design thinking, and sense of ownership.
  • Provide guidance through code reviews, design discussions, and technical design documents.
  • Promote a culture of high engineering standards, a sense of responsibility, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of success.
  • In-depth expertise in Java and modern application software.
  • Extensive experience with Azure cloud services and the development of cloud-native applications.
  • A solid understanding of and practical application of Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Experience with Agile, DevOps, and Microfront development.
  • Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices.
  • Proactive expertise in cloud engineering, lean modeling, and performance tuning.
  • The ability to lead by influencing others.
  • Knowledge of cloud networking, monitoring, and security.
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture, API design, and containerization.
