Quantitative Researchers – Discretionary

Man Group is seeking a Quantitative Researcher to drive the use of quantitative methods in discretionary investing and support the development and implementation of investment strategies. The ideal candidate should have experience working with discretionary portfolio managers and be able to explain complex technical concepts.

Purpose of the role

We are looking for a talented quantitative researcher to join our team and drive the use of quantitative methods in discretionary investing at Man Group. The ideal candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of discretionary investment strategies. The team employs a range of techniques, including deep market knowledge, and is committed to helping portfolio managers leverage all available tools in their day-to-day operations.

The team

PM Research is a team of quantitative researchers dedicated to delivering high-quality research that supports discretionary portfolio management at Man Group. We are a small team of about 10 people focused on developing behavioral analytics and building AI tools to support the investment process. In this way, we shape the way our portfolio managers invest and trade.

Your tasks

- Works closely with discretionary portfolio managers to add value to their strategies through signal development, idea generation, and testing, leveraging the markets and sectors in which they trade. - Works extensively on discretionary portfolios, utilizing market data, news sources, and market data to identify trading opportunities. - Tests and implements signals for innovation and alternative data sources. - Monitors industry and academic literature for innovation in quantitative strategies (and more broadly) and suggests how discretionary portfolio managers can benefit from it. - Collaborates effectively with team members and communicates complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience. - Stays up to date with market trends and continuously seeks opportunities to improve existing processes and drive innovation using quantitative methods. - Leverages this expertise to contribute significantly to the research pipeline, adding value to research, screening, or decision-making.

Your Skills / Experience

  • Ability to explain technical details to a non-technical audience.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and data manipulation.
  • Experience with equity risk models.
  • In-depth knowledge of asset classes, including TIER 1 and equity-specific drivers of returns.
  • An excellent academic background, preferably in a STEM field.
  • Strong knowledge of Python and data analysis techniques, as well as relevant libraries.
  • Familiarity with credit markets is advantageous but not required.
  • Ability to adapt to a quantitative research role: direct experience with discretionary portfolio managers is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with the use of AI- and LLM-based tools in investment workflows; practical experience in building such tools is a strong plus.
