Job offer
SDN Private Cloud Engineer (SME) 100% (f/m/d)
Julius Baer is seeking a Senior SDN Private Cloud Engineer (SME) in Zurich who specializes in designing and operating secure, automated cloud environments with a focus on software-defined networking. The role requires at least five years of experience in enterprise virtualization (e.g., VMware NSX, OpenStack) as well as expertise in network architectures and infrastructure automation.
Tasks
- A strong focus on building agile, automated, and secure cloud environments driven by software-defined networking (SDN) principles
- Designing the strategic direction of the network architecture through advanced implementations of microsegmentation, logical switching, firewalls, load balancing, NAT, gateways (load balancing), and IT-based control for secure network workloads
- Ensuring granular security controls and workload isolation
- End-to-end responsibility for the operation of virtualization and network service platforms, including high availability, performance optimization, troubleshooting, and incident management—with responsibility for service uptime and responsiveness (L2/L3 support)
- Lead the global rollout, monitoring, and continuous optimization of virtualized infrastructures using SDN capabilities such as stateful service chaining, overlay networks, and centralized control plane management to deliver scalable and resilient connectivity
- Implementation of large-scale infrastructure transformations, including data center migrations, technology refresh cycles, and lifecycle upgrades involving network virtualization components such as vCNI engines, edge clusters, and distributed routing engines
- Promote infrastructure automation and GitOps workflows by adopting API-first configuration, declarative policy models, and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools to enable consistent, verifiable deployments in hybrid environments
- Design and implement robust operational procedures tailored to dynamic, policy-driven network environments to ensure compliance, traceability, and operational resilience
- Implement proactive capacity and performance management for compute and network workloads using real-time telemetry streaming, flow analysis, and visibility fabrics to identify bottlenecks, model growth, and prevent degradation
- Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation (approximately one week per month) as a technical point of escalation for critical issues affecting the virtual infrastructure and network services
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related technical field. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.
- At least five years of hands-on experience as a Senior Virtualization Engineer, specializing in the design, deployment, and operation of enterprise-grade or API-first environments such as IBM Cloud, VCI, etc., as well as the management of enterprise virtualization in IaaS, DaaS, and hybrid cloud environments
- Expertise in managing and integrating enterprise VMware NSX based on vSphere, Red Hat OpenStack, or similar frameworks to ensure high availability, security, and scalability
- In-depth knowledge of software-defined networking (SDN) architectures, including overlay (VXLAN, Geneve) and underlay (BGP, VRF) networking, dynamic routing, and NSX-based protocols (NSF/sDFS), to support integrated virtual infrastructure services
- Knowledge of container platforms such as Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG/E) or VKS, particularly regarding the integration of Kubernetes clusters with SDN-based networking and security policies
- Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to provide escalation support and lead resolution efforts for critical infrastructure incidents
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of taking responsibility for complex technical initiatives with minimal supervision
