SDN Private Cloud Engineer (SME) 100% (f/m/d)

Julius Baer is seeking a Senior SDN Private Cloud Engineer (SME) in Zurich who specializes in designing and automating secure cloud environments using VMware NSX-T and Kubernetes. The role requires at least five years of experience in virtualization, as well as expertise in microsegmentation, zero-trust security, and infrastructure automation.

Tasks

  • System engineering as an interdisciplinary field of systems and platform technology, complemented by business management and operational responsibility, with a focus on designing and managing the strategic direction of network architecture through advanced implementations of microsegmentation, logical switching, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection, and global IP-based protocols (NFS/CIFS) to support integrated virtual infrastructure services
  • A strong focus on building agile, automated, and secure cloud environments driven by software-defined networking (SDN) principles
  • Integration with container platforms such as Tanzu Kubernetes (TKG/I/E) or VKS, particularly the integration of Kubernetes clusters with SDN-based network and security policies
  • Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, provide escalation support, and lead resolution efforts for critical infrastructure incidents
  • Taking on complex technical initiatives with limited oversight
  • Collaboration in Agile Environments

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related technical field. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.
  • At least five years of practical experience as a Senior Virtualization Engineer specializing in the design, deployment, and operation of enterprise-grade Blue 686 infrastructure in mission-critical environments
  • Proven expertise in VMware vSphere technologies, including ESXi, vCenter Server, and VMkernel networks, with in-depth working knowledge of Broadcom reference architectures and best practices
  • Direct experience with VMware NSX-T is a major advantage, particularly in areas such as microsegmentation, distributed security policies, edge services, and automation via API
  • Familiarity with VMware AVI (NSX Advanced Load Balancer) is a significant advantage, particularly for application delivery, intelligent traffic steering, L7 load balancing, WAF integration, and Kubernetes Ingress control
  • A proven track record in deploying and managing SDDC frameworks, preferably VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), in which NSX plays a fundamental role in network virtualization and security
  • Practical experience in automating infrastructure operations using PowerShell, Python, and/or native tools such as Terraform or Ansible, including API-driven interactions with NSX Manager and API Controller
  • Practical knowledge of Kubernetes networking (CNI) and multi-cluster networking (Service Mesh, Ingress, ClusterIP), with the ability to design and troubleshoot SDN-based networks in dynamic cloud environments
  • Strong understanding of security concepts, including zero-trust networks, encryption in transit and at rest, DDoS protection, and compliance-driven access controls (e.g., PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, FINMA)
  • Experience in capacity planning, performance benchmarking, and QoS design for virtual machine and containerized workloads
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a focus on automation and measurable improvements
  • Proven track record in implementing network digitization initiatives such as AIOps, self-service network provisioning, and Infrastructure-as-Code pipelines
  • Self-motivation, attention to detail, and the ability to take the lead on complex technical initiatives with limited supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in agile teams
