Senior Python Engineer

As a Senior Python Engineer at Mar Group in London, you will develop and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and data pipelines for quantitative research and systematic trading. The role requires strong Python skills, experience with cloud platforms, and the ability to work in an agile team and mentor junior staff.

The Role

  • Mar’s current Senior Python Engineer will participate in various cross-functional projects addressing a wide range of challenges, including systematic trading, quantitative research, application code and data platforms, and AI solutions.
  • This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from highly skilled engineers while developing your own expertise in new, innovative systems, including custom software solutions and systems that support critical areas of Mar Group's businesses.

Role Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that support quantitative research and trading
  • Design scalable, cost-efficient application and solution algorithms, and implement strategies for reusing and optimizing existing code based on system metadata
  • Build high-performance data pipelines for processing large-scale financial datasets using Python, SQL, and NoSQL standards
  • Partner with engineers, researchers, and platform teams to translate complex requirements into robust code
  • Participate in sprint planning and deliverables to increase the number of delivery streams, conduct code reviews, and apply appropriate best practices where relevant
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced employees by fostering an environment that supports delivery teams in all aspects of their work.

  • We work on a new, modern, Linux-based infrastructure using Python as our primary development language, leveraging the full scientific stack—including NumPy, pandas, Plotly, and similar libraries—as well as high-performance code such as C++, Rust, and SQL.

Key Competencies

  • Our company offers professional software development expertise in a data-centric language. Experience with Python is particularly desirable, though we are eager to collaborate with and learn from highly sophisticated code in systems that utilize emerging languages, such as Go.
  • A strong mathematical background with a solid foundation in mathematical and conceptual topics in statistics and mathematics, respectively
  • Extensive experience with data pipelines and systems, including practical experience or in-depth expertise in testing, delivery, and deployment
  • Robust cloud services, engineering, and collaboration among large teams are essential
  • Strong knowledge of one or more cloud platforms (Google GCP, MongoDB, or AzureDB)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with large datasets, both structured and unstructured
  • Ability to work collaboratively and learn within teams alongside stakeholders
  • Experience with engineering methodologies and applying them effectively, e.g., agile development methods in pull request tools
