Senior Unix Engineer

The Senior Unix Engineer is responsible for designing, securing and maintaining UNIX environments and automating operations in a global financial institution. The role also includes collaboration on DevOps tooling, Git-driven workflows and hybrid cloud strategies.

Job description

Tasks

  • Core UNIX Engineering & Support:
    • Design, secure creation, setup and maintenance of resilient UNIX environments
    • Responsibility for the OS lifecycle strategy: patching, upgrades, security baselines and hardware refresh planning
    • Maintenance of solutions and performance-optimized business systems
  • DevOps, SRE & Automation:
    • Adoption of an SRE mindset: treatment of infrastructure as code, prioritization of availability and observability, automation of toil
    • Automation of provisioning, compliance checks and configuration enforcement
    • Use of GitLab for source code control, peer-approved automation pipelines, change tracking and documentation versioning
    • Contribution to CI/CD workflows for infrastructure-as-code deployments and integration with enterprise tools such as ServiceNow, Jenkins or GitHub Actions
  • Security:
    • Ensuring that UNIX systems are hardened and compliant with security frameworks
    • Management of OS-level security policies, including firewall rules, kernel parameters, SELinux policies and secure configurations
    • Integration of systems for identity and privileged access management
    • Support audit, forensics and security event investigations in collaboration with InfoSec teams
    • Regular review and remediation of security vulnerabilities identified by Qualys, Nessus or other scanning tools
    • Contribution to incident response planning, patching SLAs and compliance reporting
    • Design and maintenance of logging, audit trails and syslog/SIEM integrations
    • Authentication, authorization and directory services
    • Integration of UNIX systems with enterprise identity management platforms
  • Other:
    • Support for service, UNIX remediation and inventory for performance and availability
    • Participation in on-call rotations, DR tests and RCA for highly critical incidents
  • Hybrid cloud & platform modernization:
    • Support for UNIX workloads running on VMware and preparation of platforms for future cloud integration
    • Assistance with cloud readiness assessments, infrastructure modernization efforts and immovable infrastructure adoption
    • Collaboration with cloud, DevOps and cybersecurity teams on secure hybrid operating models
  • Documentation & Governance:
    • Maintenance of robust documentation
    • Ensuring that all platforms and automations meet compliance standards
    • Lead or contribute to engineering design reviews, change boards and audit remediation efforts

Requirements

  • Required skills and experience:
    • Proven ability to tackle deep technical challenges with high visibility
    • Previous experience and exposure to UNIX engineering with deep expertise in large enterprise environments
    • Strong understanding of centralized authentication/authorization
    • Familiarity with shell scripting (bash, ksh, sh), strong familiarity with Python and Ansible
    • Proven experience with infrastructure-as-code principles, Git-driven configuration management and CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and Ansible/AWX
