Job offer

Staff Engineer

As a Staff Engineer at Sygnum in Zurich, you will be responsible for developing scalable systems and improving collaboration between teams. You should have experience in backend development, system performance, and secure software development, and be willing to mentor other engineers and share your knowledge.

Tasks

As a Staff Engineer, you will work across teams to build better systems and improve collaboration. You are an experienced individual contributor who combines strong technical skills with the ability to collaborate broadly—making technical decisions, supporting colleagues, and contributing to the practices and patterns we use every day. You will work on the following tasks:
  • Design and build systems that scale. Backend development, making architectural decisions, and writing code to prepare our platform for the next stage of growth.
  • Actively promoting AI-assisted development. We are early adopters of Claude Code. You will work with teams to establish practical workflows, measure impact, and advance the capabilities of these tools.
  • Lead technical excellence initiatives with teams. Identify opportunities to improve our build process, then collaborate with engineers and tech leads to implement better standards and patterns.
  • Improve how we work. Strengthen observability, testability, and resilience in our systems. Participate in incident response and drive root cause analysis that leads to real solutions.
  • Empower the engineers around you. Mentor them in system design, performance, and security-focused practices. Collaborate with people, review code, and help tech leads strengthen their teams.

Requirements

Our ideal candidate:
  • Strong experience in designing backend systems in Java or Node.js (we use Quarkus and NestJS; experience with either of these is a plus, but not required)
  • Strong knowledge of system performance, observability, and secure software development
  • Experience in building reliable, fault-tolerant systems
  • Comfort at work across team boundaries and influence on technical decisions through cooperation rather than authority
  • Desire to mentor others and openly share knowledge
Nice to have:
  • Experience in regulated environments
  • Familiarity with domain-driven design, clean architecture, test-driven development, or event-driven architecture

We offer

  • Team-first mindset. The team over the individual
  • Our people always come first. Everything starts there.
  • We deliver frequently, with high quality and reliability. Yes, that's right.
  • We celebrate successes and learn from mistakes. The key to a healthy balance
  • We are pragmatic and seek simplicity. KISS everywhere.
  • We make a positive impact. We deliver results.

Our benefits

  • The opportunity to be part of a movement that is shaping the future of the global financial system
  • Work on new, groundbreaking technology in the blockchain sector
  • Competitive salary packages and opportunities to leave your mark
  • An amazing, diverse, highly qualified, international, and motivated team of professionals
  • Regular meetings and team-building events such as Christmas parties, Oktoberfest, aperitifs
