Technical Lead – Backend Java Engineer, Full-Time (f/m/d)
Julius Baer is seeking an experienced Technical Lead for backend development in Madrid to design and provide technical leadership for Java 21 and Jakarta EE applications for the private banking division. The role combines hands-on development with mentoring and leading a team, as well as responsibility for architecture, integrations, and release processes.
YOUR LEADERSHIP
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of Java 21 / Jakarta EE backend applications that support.
- Design scalable, maintainable, and reusable software solutions that align with business and architectural requirements.
- Drive technical decisions regarding REST APIs, integration mechanisms, messaging, performance, and application architecture.
- Collaborate with product owners, ARCHES, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Own and coordinate application releases, deployments, environment readiness, and production rollouts.
- Mentor and support engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, knowledge sharing, and coaching.
- Promote engineering best practices, coding standards, governance, and continuous improvement practices.
- Lead the development of integrations using REST, SOAP, JMS, and messaging systems.
- Work closely with Oracle databases, including data modeling, performance tuning, and schema evolution.
- Support front-end teams when backend integration expertise is needed.
- Collaborate with QA, DevOps, and Operations teams to ensure smooth delivery and production stability.
YOUR PROFILE
- Expert-level Java development with extensive hands-on experience in Java 21, Jakarta EE, and JPA/Hibernate.
- Proven experience building and consuming REST and SOAP services using technologies such as JAX-RS and JAX-WS.
- Maven multi-module applications.
- A solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and enterprise application design principles.
- Experience building and consuming REST and SOAP services using technologies such as JAX-RS and JAX-WS.
- Strong understanding of Oracle databases, SQL optimization, schema design, and data performance modeling.
- Experience with messaging and integration technologies, including JMS and enterprise messaging frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of testing practices using JUnit, Mockito, and integration testing frameworks (e.g., TestContainers, WireMock, etc.).
- Experience with release management, deployment processes, and production support activities.
- Ability to lead technical discussions, make architectural decisions, and communicate effectively with technical stakeholders.
- Previous coaching and mentoring experience.
- Familiarity with Spring, OpenTelemetry, and observability best practices.
- Experience working with Docker-based local development environments.
- Exposure to Kotlin and automated integration testing frameworks.
- Gain experience driving technical improvements, platform modernization, and engineering process enhancements.
- Experience working in Agile environments with distributed and cross-functional teams.
