Vice President, Japan, BlackRock Investment Stewardship (BIS)

BlackRock is seeking a Vice President for its Investment Stewardship team in Tokyo who specializes in corporate governance, environmental, and social issues and has experience in the financial industry and excellent analytical skills. The successful candidate will serve as an expert on the local market environment and advise companies in Japan on corporate governance and sustainability issues.

Job Description

BlackRock Investment Stewardship (BIS) Vice President, Japan, is part of the Corporate Governance team. As an independent, fiduciary asset manager, BlackRock is committed to always acting in the best long-term interests of our clients. BlackRock Investment Stewardship serves as a link between our clients and the companies in which they invest.

Tasks

The main tasks include:
  • To serve as an expert in his local market for BlackRock’s Investment Stewardship Team, including for key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct research on portfolio companies to identify risks related to corporate governance practices, as well as sustainability risks and opportunities, from an investment perspective.
  • Implement BIS corporate governance guidelines for sectors and key portfolio companies, and work directly with the companies, including voting at annual general meetings.
  • To meet with chairpersons, CEOs, and other senior executives of the companies in which BlackRock invests to discuss a range of topics, including industry trends, strategy and performance, and corporate governance practices.
  • Monitor companies and contribute to the development of investment strategies and positions, occasionally in collaboration with investment teams.
  • Initiate, lead, and/or manage projects and respond to ad hoc requests.
  • Talking publicly about stewardship.
  • Contribute to the regular development of guidelines and thought leadership, including writing articles.
  • Work with BlackRock’s Investment Stewardship team to ensure that client reports and presentations meet expectations and that client inquiries regarding stewardship are answered promptly and to their satisfaction.
  • Contribute to the ongoing review of the BIS team’s deliverables and work with the investment teams on performance alignment.

Requirements

The requirements for this position include:
  • A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, communications, or a related field.
  • 6–10 years of experience in a financial services role, ideally with a proven strong understanding of financial reporting and corporate finance.
  • Experience in investment management, investment banking, corporate finance, investor relations, consulting, and/or law is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • The ability to build and maintain successful relationships with colleagues within the company and with external parties.
  • The ability to analyze and communicate complex issues and solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written critical thinking skills and a proven track record of success.
  • The ability to collaborate with colleagues who focus on stewardship while managing multiple projects at the same time.
  • Organized, self-reliant, and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Extensive knowledge of the BIS Office suite.
